Beauty and perfection, these are the words used to describe what is now called the Bust of Queen Nefertiti. The name Nefertiti is translated as “A Beautiful Woman has Come’’ ( Tyldesley 2016). If the name sounds familiar it is probably due to the fact that her name is a staple within the history of ancient Egypt. This representation of the late queen was commissioned in the 18th dynasty during the reign of her husband Amenhotep IV(1353-36 BC). This particular pharaoh is famed for his conversion to monotheism focusing on the Aten and not Amun-Re. During his reign, he removed the Amun priesthood, closed Karnak, and built another capital 200 miles from Thebes called Tell-el-Amarna. It was there that you see a shift in the way Pharaohs ruled focusing not only on the king but on the queen as well. At Tell-el- Amarna Nefertiti is given her own temple and sizable hieroglyphs that are almost the same size as her husband. To have a hieroglyph slightly equalling in size to a king is significant because pharaohs are almost always depicted as being bigger than everyone. It was in Tell-el-Amarna that a cult focusing on the royal family instead of the gods became dominate. The royal family would be depicted giving ankhs (life giving rays) to the people of Egypt as well as taking the place of gods during festivals. Towards the end of Amenhotep IV reign Nefertiti disappeared; no one is aware of how or why though it is assumed that she was assassinated. Despite such an unsolved end, the bust of Nefertiti stands as a gateway into the life of a once beautiful queen. The attention to detail is superb clearly depicting her delicate neck, dark eyes, plump lips, soft ears, and an elaborate crown. It is thoroughly impressive to see the product of a skilled and astute craftsman. Visually, the bust of Nefertiti is a picture frozen in time, forever preserving her beauty.
