When coming to Berlin we weren’t quite sure what to expect. London is numerous in its descriptions and Amsterdam is quickly becoming a travel favorite but Berlin is not advertised nearly as much as the other two even though it is just as much a major city and cultural landmark. Germany is once again characterized by that common mix of old and new that we are beginning to expect in Europe, but where a place like Amsterdam has buildings with a modern aesthetic, Berlin is far more Urban when finding the words to describe it’s design. Berlin is an interesting mix of culture underlined with a sense of history. When visiting here one might go to museum island trying to visit all of the classical buildings located there, experiencing the incomprehensible level of artifacts from the many statues, ancient mummies, and original text from some of the oldest books in existence. The British Museum is perfectly fine but it is a small gallery compared to everything the museum plien has to offer even the bust of Nefititi one of the most influential women in Egyptian history, even more so (I would say) than the famed Cleopatra.
However, if museum hopping is not your interest then you can head into the city center, a pulsing area of the city with street vendors, sidewalk performers, and(of course) shopping. The area is full of things to see and do whether your shopping or just sitting in the city center taking in the sites. There were also many other ways to see and experience the city, such as, taking a canal cruise(another welcomed European trope), taking a dungeon tour, or having dinner in a restaurant reminiscent of the Seattle space needle. My interest laid mostly in the museums but seeing the life and activity of the city was highly enjoyable and super fun. Overall Berlin is a very hip bohemian city in contrast to London’s young professionals and Amsterdam ‘ laid back vibe.
