There is something magical about old buildings. The smell of dust , lingering memories forgotten in the stone, itself a monument to history. Edinburgh Castle is one of those buildings, although, it’s more of a land mark, it’s old and marvelous. Opening it’s doors early in the morning and staying open till nine at night there is plenty of time to explore the different areas, read about the reigning monarchs that lived there, and learn it’s battle history. There are plenty of nooks and crannies to explore, and personally, I’m amazed that such a huge space(a small town really) was meant for just a few. It’s understandable why such a monument was built atop a large hill it’s views stretch to the bay reaching over the city towards the valleys and the mountains. Easy to spot enemies and rule over ones subjects. It’s an amazing sight and gives perspective into why so many craved that power and status. The inside of the castle is a collection of courtyards, recent monuments to those lost in the world war, and old rooms with fixtures dating back to the 1500’s. There is also a room where one can look upon the crown jewels, no photography allowed there though. You can also walk through one of the royal apartments having belonged to Mary Queen of Scots. It is a lot to see but even intermittent rain and cloudy skies can’t dampen the awe of being in a place that has seen multiple ages through history. If I can I would definitely visit again and hopefully learn more about what went on behind its walls.
